A child’s behaviour changes when they grow older. According to experts, if you want to understand what your child is going through developmentally, you have to first understand their behaviour.

Scott Wooding, a child psychologist in Calgary and author of The Parenting Crisis, stated that discipline is about guiding and teaching our children and it is not about punishment or anger. Disciplining your kids can help them learn from the wrong, and it’s also a way to keep them safe from doing something bad.

We often relate the word discipline with punishment. But, the term simply means teaching and learning. Below are some ways on how to discipline your child.

Top 6 ways to discipline your little one

1. Set rules and stick to them

The best rule of thumb when it comes to family rules is to be firm but fair. Try to be consistent with your rules and be ready to commit to them because children will tend to test their boundaries.

2. Set your rules early

According to Julie Green, the Executive Director of Raising Children Network, she stated that rules are best to be set as early as toddler age. This is because that is when children are experimenting with different behaviours.

3. Calm but firm

To be firm is to be determined about what you want. When you say no, it means no, when you say yes, it means yes and you have to stick to it. Note that if you use an angry voice, you’ll only scare your child away. Getting angry doesn’t always produce the outcomes.

4. Grounding

Sometimes we have to teach them that whenever they cross or break the rules, they have to be grounded. Of course, it may not be easy to tell them that they can’t do whatever they want to do, but sometimes, you just have to be strong.

5. Provide logical consequences

A great way to help kids with behavioural problems is to use logical consequences. For example, if your child refuses to clean up his mess after playtime, don’t allow him to play for the rest of the day.

6. Reward and praise good behaviour

Instead of just grounding your child and be strict and firm about just everything, please take an effort to reward and praise that poor child. Reward him or her for their good behaviour.

Rewards are a way to help them put effort on earning privileges. Praising him or her will help turn around misbehaviour fast. For example, point out his good behaviours by saying that he did an outstanding job and that you are proud of him.

Sometimes when it comes to disciplining your kids, things can somehow go out of hand. React calmly and don’t be aggressive towards them so that you can control the situation firmly. Alright, parents, you’re now good to go! You can do this! Remember, patience is the key!
