How To Tame Tantrums

1. Understand why he or she reacts so strongly
It doesn’t mean that your child’s tantrums are over when they start using words to tell you what they need or want. Your child is still learning how to handle his emotions. Always remember that tantrums are often rooted in sadness, not just anger.

2. Never try to calm him down
Ignore your child unless he is physically hurting himself or others around him. If your child starts hitting or throwing things during his meltdown, stop him immediately and remove him from the situation. Be sure to make it clear that hurting is unacceptable.

3. Don’t yell at him
The louder he screams, the softer you speak. Your child will end up talking to you nicely because he still wants to engage with you. If he loses his temper in public, take him outside as he settles down.

4. Give your child some space
Let your child get his anger out. Just like adults, they too, need to let out some anger. They are able to get their feelings out, pull themselves back together and regain self-control. Ignore him and give him some space, this trick works wonder!

5. Give him a hug
You may feel like this is the last thing you would want to do when your kid is angry and sad, but it really can calm him down. Give him a big, firm hug and don’t say a word when you do it. Hugs make kids feel secure and protected. Let them know that you care, even if you disagree with their behaviour.

Though daily tantrums are totally normal, but make sure to keep an eye for more significant problems. Sometimes, things like family matters can provoke tantrums. The next time you urge to yell, take a deep breath and consider what you want your child to learn.
