Over the past 50 years, family structure has changed greatly, and by this, several variations of family have been created, and these families are not only considered as common, but they are also accepted more compared to the past. Nuclear families Nuclear family is a traditional type of family structure consisting of two parents, mom and dad and children. Nuclear family may have more than one child, either biological or adopted. The main idea of a nuclear family is to raise kids together at home. 2. Extended families An extended family is when a family consists of more than two adults, which is related by blood or marriage and they live under the same roof. An extended family has many relatives who live and work together to achieve the same goal, which is to raise the children and to accomplish household chores and duties. This structure has been alive ever since many hundreds of years ago. 3. Single parent families Credit: Hannah Spannah This structure is when a parent is divorced, a widow or never married and yes, it consists of only a single parent and one or more child. This structure isn’t uncommon anymore and is making a change in the society. A study has shown that one out of four children are living with single parents. They are mostly supported by their relatives or family members. 4. Reconstituted families Also known as step-families and defined as a blended family. Over half of all marriages, they end up in a divorce, and many of these individuals choose to remarry, and this is when two families merge into one. Sometimes, stepfamilies are looked down by those who prefer traditional family structure, and same goes to single-parent families, but they have become more common over the years and have their own unique dynamic. 5. Childless families Childless families are families who can’t have kids or do not plan on having kids. They are often forgotten or left out by the society because they do not meet traditional standards. This structure consists of only a husband and wife who lives and work together. 6. Grandparent families Credit: Informed Choice This is the least structure of all the structures mentioned above. This structure is when one or both grandparents raises their grandchildren. This happens when the child’s parents aren’t around to care for their child. Family is important for everybody and no matter what family you are in, there is always strengths and weaknesses. Those who’ve experienced one or more changes in family type during their lifetime can relate more on the differences of family structures.
