Tips For Successful Single Parenting

Tip 1. Respect

Being respectful is the key to successful single parenting. Respect your ex, your child and most importantly, yourself.

Respecting your ex may be one of the hardest things to do when you’re trying to recover from a breakup. But, please hear me out! Your children are not there to hear you complain or speak poorly of your ex. Downgrading your ex will only make your children feel as if you think the same way about them and that you are untrustworthy.

Respect your child. Hear them out. Give them a voice. Listen to their fears, anger and grief. They have the right to be heard.

Most importantly, respect yourself. Know your limits and protect yourself. Don’t push yourself too hard to the point of exhaustion. Give yourself some time off and pamper yourself a little bit more than you should.

Tip 2. Set rules and be consistent

Let your children know that as long as he or she is under your care, they should follow your rules. Stick to the rules as strictly as possible, even if your children push back. Conduct a family meeting so that all of you can agree on some rules. When everyone gets a chance to join in, it makes it easier for your child to follow the rules.

Tip 3. Learn to say no

You need to learn how to say NO even if your child is manipulating you into giving in. I know that it’s not always easy to say no and to set firm to your boundaries, but sometimes, you have to know your limits. Don’t let your children or anyone else control you.

Tip 4. Be positive

Maintain a positive attitude no matter what. Your attitude is very contagious. It affects your kids’ ability to handle their everyday emotions and tasks. Remember that your child always looks up to you as a role model.

Tip 5. Play with your kids

Nine out of ten parents will say that their kids give them the energy to go through their everyday lives. Children satisfy their deep need for meaningful relation and motive. So, the next time you come home tired, try spending some time with your kids. Not only you, but your kids too will be much happier, and they will look forward to spending more time with you.

Fear not parents, your children will often grow up to be as happy as those who live in a typical household. Children will definitely do well with a loving adult who is interested in their daily lives. Remember that everyone has a different way of parenting and raising their own family. Whatever you do, always keep a positive mindset and attitude, and you’re close to being a fantastic parent.
