Hey expecting mummies, here’s a little heads-up!
The first few weeks after giving birth aren’t something you can fully prepare for.
You can read all the guides, buy all the “essentials”, and still find yourself sitting there at 3 a.m. thinking…why does this feel so much harder than I expected?
However, it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong; it’s just that postpartum life is more intense than people talk about, especially in Singapore, where everything outside your window is still moving at full speed.
So instead of overwhelming yourself with long lists, here are the things that actually make those early weeks feel a little more manageable.
Make Postpartum Life Easier with Small, Practical Setups
Make One Spot in the House Your “Base”: You’ll naturally end up gravitating to one place, the sofa or your bed. Set that space up properly (we love a good cart) – keep water next to you and snacks you can open with one hand. Cloths, wipes, your charger, credit card… anything you reach for more than twice a day.
Not having to get up every few minutes makes a real difference when you’re already exhausted.
Stock Up Like You Mean It: Singapore is efficient, yes. But not at 3 a.m. There will be a moment when you realise you’re down to your last few nappies or wipes, and that’s not the time you want to be checking delivery timings. But wait, you don’t need ten of everything, just enough to not run out unexpectedly.
Once you figure out what works for your baby, then bulk buying online makes life much easier.
Nights Are Easier When You Reduce Friction: Everything feels harder and more exhausting at night. So anything you can do to make things simpler will help. Keep a little night light near you, essentials within arm’s reach, and avoid anything that requires too many steps when you’re half awake.
Step Outside When You’re Ready: Even if it’s just ten minutes, one of the nicest things about living in Singapore is how accessible everything is. A quick lift ride and you’re outside. A short walk around your block, sitting downstairs with a drink, or even just fresh air for a bit can help reset your mind.
Singapore Resources That Can Help
This is where things get a bit easier because Singapore does have support; you just need to know where to look.
Confinement & Postpartum Support
- Thomson Medical Centre: Offers postpartum recovery programmes, lactation support, and workshops
- Mount Alvernia Hospital: Known for strong maternity care and breastfeeding guidance
- KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital: Provides subsidised support, lactation clinics, and postnatal care
If you’re not doing a full confinement centre stay, you can still tap into their services when needed.
Lactation Support
- Breastfeeding Mothers’ Support Group Singapore: A very active community with helplines and peer support
- Association for Breastfeeding Advocacy Singapore: Offers counselling and guidance from trained consultants
Sometimes, just having someone reassure you that what you’re experiencing is normal helps more than anything.
Meals & Nutrition
- Natal Essentials: Delivers confinement meals designed for recovery
- Tingkat Singapore: Simple, home-style meals when you don’t want to think about cooking
Eating regularly makes a huge difference to how you feel, even if it doesn’t feel like a priority at the time.
Keep It Simple Where You Can
So, mummies…if you’re about to enter this phase or you’re already in it and wondering if you’re doing okay, you are.
You don’t need to have everything under control or enjoy every moment.
Take each day as it comes, and the rest will follow through.
All the best, mummies!
