Screen time recommendations
Is your kid glued to his screen? Screens (television, computer, tablet, and smartphone) are now part of everyday life for most families. While entertaining and practical in some situations, screens can have many harmful effects on children’s health and development. This is why it is advisable to supervise their use.
The American Academy of Paediatrics made recommendations regarding the exposure of children to screens.
Before 2 years old
Children of 18 and less month old should not be exposed to screens unless it is to use an application of video chat (eg: Skype). Between 18 months and 24 months, the parents who wish it can introduce screens. However, videos and chosen applications must be high-quality and the toddlers must be accompanied by an adult who can help them to understand what they see on the screen.
Between 2 and 5 years old
For its part, the American Academy of Pediatrics indicates that the screen time of children from 2 years to 5 years should not exceed 1 hour per day. The Academy recommends that the emissions and applications be on high quality. Parents should also accompany their child to explain what he sees and how it applies to the world around him.
Parents should also ensure that screens do not replace other activities essential to child development. For instance, such as social interaction or sleep.
After 5 years old
The Academy recommends that parents of children 6 years and older set limits on the amount of time spent on a screen and the types of media used. However, the Academy does not give a daily limit for screen time. For this reason, parents should make sure that the use of screens does not reduce the time given to sleep, physical activity, homework and any other activity that is essential to healthy lifestyles.
