Travel without kids

Whether for business or pleasure, parents can travel without their children for several reasons: cost, convenience… What can we make to help his child live the separation and feel reassured when you let them to somebody else?

Here are some suggestions, which will help you plan your trip without your children:

Prepare your kids

The duration of your absence must be adapted to your degree of confidence. If this is the first separation, limit your absence to 1 night or 1 weekend. As your confidence increases, you may want to consider taking longer vacation. During your absence, call your child to reassure you and check that everything is going well.

Have your child stay in your own home during your vacation. This will prevent him from adjusting to a new environment in addition to a new person. If he is surrounded by things he knows well, he will feel more comfortable and safer during your absence.

To ease the separation, give your child a calendar in which your departure and return dates are shown and show him how to score an “X” every day between 2. Give him pictures of you that he will be able to watch or a personal object that can comfort him.

Prepare yourself

Entrusting your children to someone else requires a lot of trusts. If you are not comfortable leaving your children with another person’s care, you will certainly not enjoy your vacation. It is therefore important to choose people you trust, such as grandparents, extended family or long-time friends who respect your values. It is essential that you and your child feel comfortable with this person. For instance, you can prepare him by telling “Guess who is coming to play with you next week?

Invite the person who will keep your child at home so that he or she can spend time with her. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend with this person so that they feel more comfortable with it. Before leaving, make sure your child understands that this person will take care of him during your vacation…

Make sure that this person has all the information they need.

Finally, regardless of your child’s age, always leave by saying goodbye stating that you will come back. Toddlers don’t have a good notion of time; you can prevent them a few days before the departure. Also remember to remind him that he has the right to be very happy to enjoy his grandparents, which is the case most of the time! Besides, he is going to receive gifts for your return.
