Nail biting is considered to be one of the most common toddlers’ habit. It usually starts around the age of 3 to 4 years old. Many medical experts believe that nail biting may seem harmless at first. But it may or may not be a habit that easily disappears like thin air. Some children still do it as they are growing up.

Nail biting may see as a way your little kiddo express stress even when they are doing it to fight boredom. When nail biting become part of them, that is when it indicates the leading cause of it. Little did we know nail biting is one of the very common symptoms of anxiety disorder. But don’t worry, this is just a basic fact about anxiety disorder. Your little one may probably be doing it out of boredom or to get your attention.

Instead, if it is their way to express stress, it probably because of the things in their surrounding that you may or may not notice. Your children may not say it, but as a parent, you would notice that something is off with your little kiddo. Even asking them about it may come to no avail as they won’t tell you.

Technically, nail biting is considered bad because of bleeding and infection caused by it. It can damage your children’s nails and also their teeth and gums caused by the bacteria on their fingers that they ‘used’ to put into their mouth. Nail biting also worsens their anxiety as it is improper to bite them in public.

Ways to Help Your Kids Cope with Nail biting

First and foremost, don’t scold them for doing such things because that will only make them want to do it more. Rather than scolding, you can try to find out what is causing your children to behave that way. Even if at times there is no explanation as to why they like to do it.

Ignoring it may not be the best solution to the problem because they still have the urge to bite their nail or finger. Unless they are the ones finding the alternative to break the habit which may seem impossible at their young age. So, it is best if you could try and find some alternatives for them to lessen the urge to bite their nails and finger. Work it out with your kids and see the right alternative for them.

My suggestion is to distract them by doing some hands-on activities together. So you get to spend some time with them together, and your kids will learn new things while having fun with their parents! Isn’t this better?

Otherwise, if nothing seems to be working out, it is best to consult the doctor as they may have some solution for it. All in all, the most important thing is that you shouldn’t judge your kids for behaving that way. Try to understand them the way you wanted to be understood by others.

There you go! We hope the tips somehow will help your kids overcome the habit. It may not be much, but we do hope it gives you the general idea of it.
