Skincare and makeup is an essential daily routine for women. All of us wants to have a beautiful complexion and a glowy and dewy glass-like skin, even pregnant women too! Of course, being pregnant is a joy, but it also means giving up some foods and activities for this nine months. Not to mention that pregnant women also have to be careful about their skincare and makeup products because several ingredients can disrupt the skin barrier.

We know that you can be a little lost at times and we don’t blame you for that! Ingredient lists can be daunting, so, here are some ingredients that you need to watch out on and we even simplify things for you.

Moms, if you are doubtful about your products, stop using them. It is best not to use it because you might not know what could go wrong. It’s better to be safe than sorry! But note that there are still many skincare and makeup products that are safe for pregnant women!

1. Sunscreens

When buying sunscreen, make sure to look out for these ingredients. Avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, oxtinoxate, menthyl anthranilate and octocrylene. Or, if you are using sunscreens with the elements above, toss them out of the window!

2. Aluminium chloride hexahydrate

Aluminium chloride hexahydrate can be found in antiperspirant. Be sure to check for aluminium chloride hexahydrate and aluminium chlorohydrate.

3. Salicylic acid

This beta hydroxy acid is often used in products for acne-prone skin. According to research, oral salicylic acid has been associated with birth defects and bleeding in pregnancy. Clinical reviews have also considered these topical salicylic acids low-risk for the baby if used only on local areas for a limited time. Still, just in case if anything happens, some dermatologists suggest avoiding salicylic acid in any form.

4. Retinoids

Though retinoids works wonder on both acne and fine lines, it is considered unsafe to use during pregnancy. Instead of using retinoids, use products that contain azelaic acid, which is also used for acne and fine lines. It works by killing bacteria found in pores and also decreases the production of keratin.

5. Parabens

Found in most makeup products, parabens are harmful even if you use it too much on a daily. Be sure to keep away from propyl, butyl, isopropyl, isobutyl and methyl parabens especially when you’re pregnant!

6. Phthalates

This ingredient can be found in products with synthetic fragrances and nail polishes. To be on the safe side, make sure you avoid diethyl and dibutyl especially.
