Education is a part of learning process. Students work really hard for their future, and some are because of crazy strict parents. Due to this, students don’t enjoy studying and thinks that it is stressful. The purpose of this article is to let you guys know that learning is not a competition. There is no need for 1st, 2nd, 3rd or last place.

In Singapore, from next year onwards, even if a child finishes last, it will no longer be a problem in their report cards. This is a move made by Education Minister Ong Ye Kung with the hope of showing students that there is not a need of competition for education.

A student’s position will no longer be a problem in their report cards concerning class or cohort. They are to drop information which includes:

On September 28, The Ministry of Education stated that this will allow students to focus more on their progress and also to encourage them from being overly concerned about being compared by adults or friends.

No more exams!

From next year on, all examinations and assessments for students from primary 1 and 2 will be removed, and they will not be counted in an overall grade, but teachers will still continue teaching like normal, and they are required to gather information about the students’ discussion, homework and quizzes. Qualitative descriptors will be used by schools in the placing of marks and grades.

For students above primary 1 and 2, the marks for each subject they take will be rounded off and will be presented as a whole number with no decimal points. This is to reduce the focus on academic comparisons. Parents too will always be updated by the school about their child’s performances during parent-teacher meetings.

According to education minister, Mr Ong Ye Kong, he stated that becoming the first and second in class or level has traditionally been a proud recognition of a student’s achievement, but at the same time wants every child to understand that learning isn’t a competition and this is for a good reason, but of course, they can still judge and evaluate their performance, strength and weaknesses in their report card.

Competing is not a learning process. Education is about trying your best in this learning process. Learning should be fun and enjoyable, not stressful. When a student competes, it doesn’t give other students the chances to prove that they can do it too, without being judged by others.
