Scars – they’re more than just marks on your skin, right? Whether it’s a keloid scarring or the proud reminder of a C-section, scars can sometimes have a bigger impact on your confidence than you might expect. To help you manage your scars and take control of your skin’s health, we sat down with Dr Kartini Farah Rahim, a dermatologist at Avisena Women’s & Children’s Specialist Hospital, to explore how scars form, how to treat them, and which treatments are most effective. Dr Kartini Farah Rahim, Consultant Dermatologist at Avisena Women’s & Children’s Specialist Hospital Dr Kartini Farah Rahim is a registered dermatologist under the National Specialist Registry. Scars are a natural part of the healing process and are not completely avoidable. When your skin is injured, be it a cut, scrape, or surgical incision, collagen, a fibrous protein, steps in to repair the damage by closing the wound. Scars typically form when collagen production goes into overdrive, leading to an excessive buildup during the healing process. The appearance of scars, however, is influenced by various factors, including the severity of the injury, your age, genetics, and overall health. Some scars fade over time, while others may remain visible or even raise up, like hypertrophic scars. In the case of keloid scars, they can expand beyond the original injury site, growing bigger over time. Q: How can we minimise scarring from the get-go? To reduce the appearance of scars, the right care at the right time is essential. Once your wound is fully closed and stitches are removed, it’s time to shift the focus to scar care. Solutions like scar-reducing polyurethane patches can help soften, lighten, and flatten scars over time. These patches activate the skin’s regeneration process while creating an ideal healing environment. They’re designed to fit seamlessly into your routine and are easy to use! Just remember to replace them daily for the best results. Q: Can you tell us more about other scar treatment options? There are numerous treatments available for scar care, and it’s essential to choose one that aligns with your skin type and specific needs. Among these, scar-reducing patches made from polyurethane is an effective and convenient option. These patches offer both comfort and discretion, blending seamlessly with your skin while actively promoting the healing process. Made from breathable, skin-friendly, and water-resistant material, they create an ideal environment to reduce the visibility of scars. By maintaining balanced moisture levels and optimal temperature, polyurethane patches support the skin’s natural regeneration, helping scars soften, lighten, and flatten over time. Best of all, it’s designed for daily replacement, so they provide a hassle-free and effective solution for managing scars of various sizes and types. Alternatively, for those exploring other options, silicone-based products like gels, creams, and plasters are also popular. While effective in reducing scars, they require frequent cleaning or reapplication, which some may find tedious and greasy. Massage oils offer another option but they too share similar drawbacks. Q: What about other scars that don’t seem to fade? Generally, laser therapy or steroid injections can be an effective choice to reduce the appearance of various scars. While these treatments are highly effective, they may come with a much higher cost. So, if you’re dealing with significant scars, it’s important to consult with a specialist to find the best treatment plan for you. Always remember, patience is essential and healing takes time so it’s important to be consistent with any of the choices you make.
