Gut health has a direct link to your child’s growth and development.

You may not realise it, but your child’s gut is the powerhouse that supports everything from strong bones to a robust immune system.

In this episode of AskMeDoctor!, we sat down with Dr Misa Noda, a consultant paediatrician from Petite Practice, to help us learn more about the importance of gut health to your little one’s overall health and wellbeing.

Q1: How exactly is gut health connected to a child’s growth and development?

Your child’s gut is home to trillions of tiny microorganisms. Together, they form what we call the gut microbiota. A little but mighty community working hard behind the scenes to support your child’s growth.

Q2: So, what are these microorganisms doing in there?

They’re busy influencing key areas of growth and development like brain development and learning, a strong immune system, absorption of nutrients, regulation of mood, appetite and sleep, as well as overall body growth.

Q3: How do they promote growth in children?

When the gut microbiota is balanced, it helps a child’s body absorb important nutrients efficiently.

Nutrients such as calcium and protein are the building blocks for strong bones, muscles and tissues. Without them, growth could be affected.

Q4: What happens if gut health isn’t in a good shape? Could it really affect our children’s growth?

Unfortunately, it can. When gut health is compromised, the body struggles to break down and absorb essential nutrients such as calcium for building strong bones and protein for building and repairing muscles and tissues. Without these, growth may be significantly impacted.

Q5: Are there any signs that parents could look out for?

Children with poor gut health often show symptoms like bloating, constipation or diarrhoea.

These digestive issues disrupt how the body absorbs nutrients, and over time, this may slow down growth, weaken the immune system, and even cause a lack of energy.

Q6: Are there any signs that parents could look out for wellbeing and development?

A healthy gut is a foundation for proper growth, strong immunity, and overall wellbeing.

Recognising and addressing gut health issues early can make a big difference in your child’s development.

Q7: How can parents support their child’s gut health and support proper growth as well?

It starts with a well-balanced diet. Foods rich in calcium and protein play a huge role because they help with growth and repair.

For example, yogurt is an excellent choice as it’s loaded with good gut bacteria that support digestion and absorption of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins like calcium and vitamin D to build strong bones and proteins to help the body grow.

Q8: But are all yogurts the same? Is there anything specific that parents should look out for?

Great question.

Not all yogurts are created equal. Look for options with live cultures like S. Thermophilus and L. Bulgaricus.

These beneficial bacteria help keep the gut microbiome healthy, improving digestion and ensuring your child absorbs the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy.

Q9: How can parents make sure that they get enough calcium in their child’s diet?

It starts with being mindful of what your child eats. Certain things like a diet high in sodium or too much caffeine, can block calcium absorption.

So, it’s a good idea to cut back on processed foods and opt for fresh snack options.

Q10: What are some of the best foods to include for calcium?

Focus on calcium-rich options like dairy products. As we highlighted earlier, milk, yogurt and cheese are all excellent choices.

Leafy greens like spinach and kale are also great, along with fortified cereals. All of these can help ensure your child gets the calcium they need for healthy growth.
